Castel Sant'Angelo - the Pope's Fortress!
Yesterday, Castel Sant’Angelo,
which was the Pope’s fortress, had been opened until late at night – it usually
happens during summer and being this one of this summer’s last nights, I decided
to have a stroll in this magnificent Renaissance castle. Before being a castle,
it was a Roman building as for so many things in the “Eternal City”. Later it
became the Pope’s fortress, which he used during attacks like, for example,
during the Sacco di Roma. Today
Castel Sant’Angelo is an open museum and one can see the splendid Mannerist
frescoes and the Papal Apartments, as well as Pope Clement VII bathroom, called
La Stufetta! The panorama on the top is also fantastic
and unique! I hope you will enjoy the pictures!
