I wrote my PhD thesis on the Buonomin...Hi Edoardo,

I wrote my PhD thesis on the Buonomini di San Martino, their fresco decorations and piety and charity in late quattrocento Florence.

Just a few points that you may wish to include:

The ancient church of San Martino del Vescovo was partly subsumed into the buildings around it. There is architectural evidence of this and the church's original orientation and an image of it can be found in the Codex Rustici.

The oratory was not given to the confraternity. They initially rented it and then purchased it.

The Buonomini's remit was to help the poveri vergognosi before poverty dragged them into disgrace, rather than after. The key was to not allow a fall to happen.

It was thought for the longest time that the charity helped aristocratic friends (which they did sometimes). But the majority of the poor ashamed that received help were just regular working people.

The Buonomini had no uniform, on the regular civic clothes that were popular in Florence.

I was the first scholar to properly conduct a thorough art historical analysis of the Buonomini frescoes. Following several years of research and study, my conclusions were that nine of the paintings were completed by the workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio and that The Dream of Saint Martin was executed by Lorenzo di Credi - his only known surviving work in fresco.

Francesco d'Antonio, the miniaturist, Procurator of the Ashamed Poor and friend of Lorenzzo de' Medici certainly executed a small work for the Buonomini (a miniature in their ledgers, kept in the archive above the oratory). However, Bargellini's notion that he may have painted the frescoes is not well founded.

The Making an Inventory fresco wasn't influenced by the nearby courts I don\t think. This is a scene which shows what happened during an initial visit by the Buonomini to a family in need. It was part of their process of assessment.

If there's any further information that you need, please don't hesitate to ask.Samantha Hughes-Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15218182609259220536noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4984671428242717974.post-64748394397232038462017-03-06T00:12:54.646+01:002017-03-06T00:12:54.646+01:00A pleasure!
