St. Charles Borromeo railed against it, as did at least one pope. The chasuble - the "little house" - is hardly such when it consists of two "flaps" of cloth hanging front and back, and this form originated in "fashion". In the 16th century, fuller chasubles worn by high ranking clergy became so stiff with ornamentation and "bling" that priests had trouble moving in them. The solution is to simply, correct? WRONG. Instead, KEEP the bling - and cut away the sides, thus allowing what had been hidden beneath the chasuble to be gussied up with even more bling. Ordinary priests of course, copied the new "look". Gothic style chasubles are stately, traditional, graceful, and fitting for heir purpose. Fiddle backs are lame, "sandwich board" descendants born from sartorial excess, and should be relegated to the same "dustbin" as horrible "chasubles" that were worn in the 60's and 70's. They too tinkered with tradition to make a "fashionable appeal". The Gothic or "monastic" shape still predominates. As for "Sarumists" they hardly exist as a species in the UKManiplemanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16132176087757359148noreply@blogger.com
