Dedicatio Sanctae Mariae ad Nives (Dedication of Saint Mary of the Snows).

On this day we celebrate the foundation of one of the main basilicas of Rome: St. Mary Major - the dedication of the church occurs on 5 August because according to the legend... during the pontificate of Liberius, a Roman patrician - John and his wife, who had no heirs, made a vow to donate their possessions to the Virgin Mary. They prayed that she might make known to them how to dispose of their property... On 5 August at the height of the Roman summer, snow fell during the night on the summit of the Esquiline Hill. On that same night they had a vision of the Virgin Mary who told her to build a basilica in her honor on the very spot that was covered with snow. During that same night also Pope Liberius had a dream - he was told to mark the area on which the church had to be built, and so he did, all by himself... The Basilica is still known as "Our Lady of the Snows", a name given to it by Medieval missals and still used until the Vatican Council in 1969. Every 5 August the feast of the dedication of the basilica takes places in it - the Dedicatio Sanctae Mariae ad Nives (Dedication of Saint Mary of the Snows).

Concede nos famulos tuos, quaesumus, Domine Deus, perpetua mentis et corporis sanitate gaudere: et, gloriosa beatae Mariae semper VĂrginis intercessione, a praesenti liberari tristitia et aeterna perfrui laetitia. Amen.

Grant us Thy servants, we beseech Thee, O Lord God, to enjoy perpetual health of mind and body; and by the glorious intercession of blessed Mary ever Virgin, to be delivered from present sorrows and to enjoy everlasting gladness. Amen.
